Our client loved his newly purchased vintage co-op apartment, except for the Master Bath. “I want a tub and shower” he said of the small room, “And, I want the bath to look like it could be original to the building.”
He continued, “I inherited two dragon gargoyles from my grandfather who was an architect / builder in Philadelphia. I want them used in the bathroom.”
So began the jigsaw puzzle of this bathroom. The wet room shower encompasses a slipper tub while the tile panel mouldings provide so much depth and ambience that you feel like you stepped back in history.
We filled the room with texture. Every surface of the wet room is tiled. Large custom basket weave on the floor and small basket weave on the new barrel-vaulted ceiling. As the field tile is beveled, no unplanned cuts could be made with the field tile as the depth of the tile center exceeded the tile edge treatment. The field tile layout was planned in advance with no cuts, the tile custom made per that order, and the plan was executed with minimal changes.
A custom vanity with flanking cabinetry surrounds the lavatory. The vintage gargoyles with the copper pipe shaped like a tongue now help fill the room with steam.
